Mario Cristobal: Building Trust, Discipline, and Swagger at the U

I've had the privilege of getting to know Mario Cristobal over the course of his tenure as head coach at the U.

In his first two seasons, Mario was intensely focused on assembling a team of trusted individuals and establishing the right processes. He knew other aspects needed attention, but his mission to get the foundation right was unwavering. He kept his head down, prioritizing the work above all else.

Since spring, however, I've noticed a shift in Mario. He’s started giving fans more access to the program and players, with initiatives like Canes Camp, which I think is fantastic—something I've been advocating for. As fans, we’ve been craving more, but now I understand why he waited for the right moment.

Did you see how he and the players celebrated during and after the Gators game? It was done in a disciplined and respectful manner. They’ve earned it. While we didn’t play to our full potential, I didn’t see any reckless plays or penalties. Everyone was in sync. It was a beautiful sight, especially in person.

Last year, Mario wouldn’t have allowed such celebrations. However, I believe he now trusts his players and staff more deeply and senses that we’re onto something special. It was the first time we saw the swagger and emotion from our sidelines, but it was expressed in a controlled and focused way.

The journey has just begun, and the best is yet to come.
