Don’t Coach Scared: No Xavier Restrepo as Punt Returner

I get it — our fans, myself included, have some level of PTSD. But to meet and exceed expectations this year, we need to coach like we recruit: brash and bold with a take-no-prisoner mentality.

On Twitter, some of our well-respected fans and Canes insiders are suggesting that Xavier should be returning punts in Gainesville. They claim that in a hostile environment, it’s best to play it safe.

C’mon! We’ve been playing it safe for 20 years. It’s time to move on from being a conservative team. We have the talent, and it’s time to use it — correctly.

The Miami championship blueprint has always featured dynamic plays on special teams, particularly from our punt returners.

Now is not the time to coach scared. We have championship-caliber talent and systems in place.

I believe in RayRay Joseph as our punt returner. Let's pour everything we have into setting him up for success and let’s block some field goals and punts. Who is going to be the next Tremain Mack? Rudolph?

By the way, this is no slight on Xavier. He’s a top-three WR in the U.S. He’s just not a dynamic punt returner, and that’s okay. Let him focus on making a killing as a wide receiver.
